I spent a wonderful evening out with my family recently, and at the end of the night the kids chanted the familiar “I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight”  as they looked sleepily at the stars.

It elicited in me a chuckle and then a long pause. What were those dreams I had as a kid when the world of possibilities were as endless as my imagination? What do we do to carry out the wishes we dream for ourselves? And more importantly, how many of us wish about the past instead of dreaming of something for our futures? 

As a Realtor®, I hear a lot of regretful wishing from people who passed on a home, made a bad move, or in hindsight see they should have acted when they didn’t. I am here to pre-empt that regret with some advice that warrants your serious consideration: when this economy recovers (and I firmly believe it will), your dream deals will vanish. That’s right. Just this spring, pending home sales rose 6.7% and currently our local banks are hunkering down to liquidate that lagging inventory--cleaning house, so to speak. The inventory of foreclosed upon homes is dwindling, the economy is beginning to show small yet hopeful signs of stabilization and recovery, and those who sat out this opportunity will be singing their own sad lullaby to a should have, would have, could have, tune.

Though it has been of major personal significance to all of us, the loss in our home values is merely a hiccup in the long history of real estate which over time shows a steady overall climb in value.

This is the opportunity we’d hear our grandparents talk about when their friends bought into a technology stock that was too new-fangled to garner their own consideration. This is the time in our own history that our peers will talk about 10, 20, and 30 years down the line as the moment that secured their futures.

Remember, 90% of the millionaires in this country achieved their status by leveraging real estate. They seal the deal when they buy the house at the right time and price. Out of economic downturns and depressions were born millionaires and million dollar ideas. While things seem bleak, the glass really is half full if you look at all of the opportunity that is currently presenting itself in real estate. Looking back at the history of man and money, things are certain to rebound and are showing all the signs of doing so now.
